Job description

As a Chapter Lead Data Engineering you will play a key role in driving the success of Data Engineering within the Analytics Engineering team from ideation to the delivery of data-driven products and solutions that create a 10x impact for our end-user. You will be involved in all engineering projects and be responsible for maintaining very high-quality software standards.

For 30% of your time, you will have hands-on involvement. As a Data Engineer at Analytics Engineering, you will work in a cross-functional team which takes end-to-end ownership and responsibility and contributes in an Agile way to the full lifecycle of an application, from user research and implementation to running it in production.

Next to the hands-on project related work, the rest of 70% of your time you will be responsible for an awesome group of data engineers from different technological backgrounds in your chapter from coaching and professional development to hiring and staffing. Furthermore, you will be responsible for promoting data engineering excellence within the organization.

Your passion is to work with the latest and greatest technologies that make working with substantial amounts of data easy, you are proactive in keeping yourself up to date and are always searching for new ways to discover modern technologies. You also enjoy laying the architectural foundations for the things you are working on. You combine both thinking of the future and a hands-on, right-now attitude. You will work in a team with highly skilled people and enjoy a creative atmosphere in which trying things out is encouraged.

You are in-depth familiar with any of the back-end programming languages like Python or Scala or Kotlin and feel at home working with distributed applications.

Your work environment

The Analytics Engineering team is a team of 120 people that has the mission to make banking in ING data driven. We do this by combining UX research and engineering with data science to deliver high value solutions and products for our organization. We work in a fun and creative environment, and we are dedicated to bringing out the best in both each other and our projects. We have offices in Amsterdam (primary office), London, Warsaw (currently building new teams here), Katowice (Data platform team) and Romania (IT Risk, Data liberation).

Chapter Lead Profile

  • You have at least 5 years of (global) work experience in the Data (software) Engineering horizons (methods, technology, data)
  • You have a proven track-record of developing, coaching and mentoring people from different technological backgrounds.
  • You have experience and love leading teams to drive results and interact with (senior level) stakeholders
  • You can explain complicated subjects clearly
  • You are friendly and approachable and can challenge data engineers
  • You are motivated to keep up to date with the latest developments and to introduce them to the team and projects where applicable
  • You can see where ING can create steps towards becoming a truly data-driven bank.
  • You are always thinking one step ahead, for example in advising about the best way of implementation.
  • You are a team player who strikes effective balance between independence and acting in the interest of the team


Do you recognize yourself in this profile:

Required:

  • Knowledge of data manipulation and transformation, e.g. SQL
  • Hands-on experience building complex data pipelines e.g. ETL
  • Hands-on experience managing and further developing distributed systems and clusters for both batch as well as streaming data (S3/Spark and/or Kafka/Flink)
  • Programming in scripting languages, e.g. Python
  • Programming in a statically typed language, e.g. Java/Scala, Kotlin, Golang
  • Experience in setting up both SQL as well as noSQL databases
  • Deployment and provisioning automation tools e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Openshift, CI/CD
  • Bash scripting and Linux systems administration
  • Security, authentication and authorisation (LDAP / Kerberos / PAM)
  • Affinity with Advanced Analytics, Data Science

Nice to have:

  • Being a committer to Open Source projects is a strong plus;
  • Experience with building distributed, large scale and secure applications
  • Knowledge of machine learning, or at least strong affinity with it;
  • Good understanding of databases including RDBMS, non-SQL and time-series databases;
  • Experience in building 0-downtime applications/components;
  • Experience with working in an agile/scrum way, but at least you should have a strong willingness to do so;
